The Reasons Why WWE’s Product Feels Vanilla

Whenever the word professional wrestling is mentioned today, the first thing people think of is the WWE. After all, they are the longest and biggest professional wrestling company ever. But that does not mean everything they do is the best. In fact, the lack of other competition has affected the WWE’s motivation. Despite the numbers and ratings falling, the WWE doesn’t seem too worried. They still go through their formula the same way they have been for a while now. The reasoning behind this has many variables. One of which is the creative staff.

Nobody that has a brain that works logically would ever deny that Vince McMahon isn’t a genius in wrestling. However, nobody can deny that Vince McMahon has been around the business along time and that his age is catching up with him. Typically when stuff like this happens, people start to lose their mind (well, we all know Vince lost his mind along time ago, but really, really lost it). To state it as clearable as possible, he might not be as creative as he once was.

Vince McMahon is a control-freak. He loves things the way he wants them to be done. He nearly runs the WWE like a government under dictatorship. What ends up happening under these conditions is the writers start writing for Vince McMahon’s approval and not for the fans.

According to pwinsider, Vince McMahon was unhappy about the creative team and was going to make rapid changes to spice it up more. However, nothing close to that has been mentioned yet. But it would be a good idea. Bryan Gewirtz, head writer of Raw, has been there for nine years on the same show. The average booker back in the oldschool days would tell you after 6 months, most likely your ideas become stale if you continue to book. Gewirtz is a bit different in terms of he has other writers also writing for him. But nevertheless, nine years is nine years. The same goes for other people like Michael Hayes and everyone else that has been there doing this brutal job for that amount of time. Plus, it wouldn’t be that complex to pull off either. They could have a group of writers for 6 months then switch off or something similar to that.

The point is they need to switch something up. The TV shows are too predictable and vanilla, the characters are terrible and lack relevance to real life society, the angles/storylines are too uninspiring and heatless, and the list could go on. What they need to do, whichever way they want to do it, is make the TV shows feel like you are going to miss something if you don’t see it live, meaning make it more unpredictable; throw some curveballs when people are expecting fastballs, and give the fans a reward time to time, i.e. a good, long match on TV. This doesn’t mean give out feel moneymaking matches, but let’s say for example Daniel Bryan wrestles CM Punk for 15 minutes on TV. Something like that. They also need to flesh out their wrestler’s characters. Give them something that standouts and separates them from somebody else. But make it realistic – so people can relate to this person in a good or bad way. And make the angles/storylines more realistic. Don’t have feuds over stupid stuff like Edge kidnapping Paul Bearer and feeding him too many chicken wings. Have a feud other something genuine, something real, something people will watch this and say if I were John Cena, I would rip CM Punk apart—and make them (the fans) want to pay to see it.
